Update on the Older Chicks

So, a while ago I posted about our broody hen. It has been about a month since hatching, so here is an update on them.

We lost 1 chick a couple weeks ago. She got caught in the fencing between the coop wall and the outside, so sadly she froze. That being said, we still have 4. The loss of one is actually not too bad. The problem with naturally hatching is that you do have more losses.

The chicks are almost completely feathered now, and mamma is starting to get tired. They are still being kept separate from the others, but mamma can fly out of the lot, which she has been doing pretty regularly the past couple of days. Once they get a little bigger, we will allow them to integrate.

This is what I call the "wander stage". I like to keep them in the little lot for a while longer to prevent them from wandering too far and slipping through the fence. The lot can seem like a big place for these little guys, so they have a chance of getting lost.
