Strawberry Ploy for a Plot
So today was starting a strawberry plot.
I love strawberries, so I am super excited about this one!
First, when picking strawberries you must consider when you would like strawberries and what you would plan to do with them. There are 2 main types: June-bearing (1 big harvest in June, great for canning) and ever-bearing (the bear from June to Frost). I am not a canner, so ever-bearing for me!
Now, there are several ways to get your strawberry plants. Seeds (can be difficult to start), bare roots, already started plants. I decided to do a mix of bare roots and already started plants. I wont lie, I have a tendency to kill young plants, so I wanted a couple to fall back on, but the bare roots are much more economical!
The picture is not the best, because it is afternoon, but you can see my garden plot. Strawberries like loamy soil, so I had to buy some bagged garden soil to plant in. You will also notice 2 big pots, those are my mint plants and spinach. The spinach are seeds that I started this year and the mint was planted from root clippings last year.
Now, strawberry plants take about a year to establish to grow fruit. Hopefully, I wont kill it before that!
