Fish and Ducks - Bad Combo!
Well, it is coming into summer, and that means our duck ponds are getting nasty. We gave our ducks 2 kiddie pools and buried them to make it easier for the ducks to get in and out. This makes the pools difficult to clean. To clean them, we empty them via buckets and shovel out the sludge off the bottom.
I has the wonderful idea to make it a little ecosystem and insert fish into the pools to eat the algae and help keep the pools clean.
This was a great idea gone horribly wrong.
First, I has read that ducks eat fish. Knowing this, I decided to get some fish that would grow to be too large to eat. So I got some goldfish. Similar to Koi, they can get quite big. My thinking was that the fish would hide at the bottom of the pool while the ducks were swimming around.
I inserted the fish, and promptly the ducks ate every single one! The ducks enjoyed their little snack and it did provide them with some enrichment for the day.
So back to the algae drawing board!
