Acting as Mama Chicken

The other day, one of our speckled sussex hatched out a clutch. She was a great incubator and all of her eggs hatched, except one. Mama had decided that she was tired of sitting on the eggs and hopped off. There was 1 little egg left that the chick was starting to crack through.

This is a very important time, when the chicks get too cold, they wont be able to get out. So we decided to help it out.

We popped it out of the shell the rest of the way, then I spent a couple hours holding him to warm him up. I couldn't give the chick to spot until the chick was a bit older and could keep up with the older chicks.

Once the chick was dried and rested, I was able to put him/her back with it's mother and the rest of the brood. I went to check in on it the next morning and it is doing well.
