Plaza Market Saturday

Saturday was a good market. We had our first round of potatoes and zucchini and we were also able to sell our lettuce heads. Seeing as it was the first of the season for the zucchini, we decided to sell them by the piece and not by the pound. We did 25 cents for the small and 50 cents for larger ones.

The potatoes are what are known as "new potatoes", or in other terms, potatoes that are picked before the plants dies. Because of this, they tend to be a little more expensive, so we sold them for $3.00 per pound. Sadly, we only had 2 pounds so far as the crop is not ready for harvest.

Since we are still selling a few eggs to one of the guys on campus and a co-worker or 2 and all the broody hens, we only had about 4 dozen eggs on Saturday. A dozen duck eggs and a dozen chicken eggs. Some of the people at the market were a bit sad, they seem to like all our brightly colored eggs.

We also had a few heads of lettuce. We sold the larger heads for $4, and the rest between $1-$2 based on size. The average price of lettuce at the market is $3 per bag (usually quart sized). Most of the farmers cut and wash their lettuce before selling, however I tend to leave mine untouched. I feel like it stays better longer that way.

All in all, we sold out in about 40 minutes and so decided to pack up and leave early. We were out there for about an hour and made $37. Hopefully, the garden will start producing more and we will have more to sell next time.
