The Squash Takeover
Zucchini is starting to get going and bear fruit. They are getting huge! I am super excited for our zucchini this year.
I started them from seeds, first time starting seeds for me, and I played the chance game by starting them a bit early outside. In New Mexico, we can easily still get frost in May. Even though it gets cold at night, during the day can be very hot and can burn many a sprout. So, I decided to risk it.
Since I was starting from seeds, I put my plants out around the middle to end of April. This way, they would have a few weeks before the heat set in to get established. We did lose 1 plant to wind, the base of the plant broke off and went flying. The rest, however, are doing tremendous and are staring to bear fruit. I am a little worried since they are bearing so early that they will stop early too.
Because of this, I am trying to stagger my plants. I have some yellow squash plants that I have started from seeds recently, and I have planted them out last week. I don’t have a lot of room left in the garden, so we will see how they grow.
