Farmer's Market New Mexico WIC Program
New Mexico has several programs to help allow low income families get the fresh produce that they otherwise may not be able to get.
One is the WIC program through Farmer's Market New Mexico, this program gives WIC participants and seniors vouchers to specifically use at the farmer's markets for fresh fruits and produce. This is a great program allowing kids to get the appropriate nutrition and for farmer's in lower income areas to make a bit more money. Socorro is one such place and you can tell it makes a huge difference.
On the farmer's side, all you need to do is register your farm, often they do this at your farmer's market when you register to sell your produce. You will be given a farm identification number.
The purchasers will use the vouchers just like checks. They typically come in 5 dollar increments and all you have to do is sign them and take them to the bank.
