Having Baby Rabbits

Whenever you start having baby rabbits, or start thinking about having baby rabbits, there are a few things to know.

First, having babies in rabbits is kindling.

Gestation is about 28 days. Often, you may not know that mama is pregnant until you are close to the due date.

When mama bunny is getting ready to kindle, she will begin pulling fur. This helps mom make a nest for her baby bunnies and keeps them warm.

With our mama, she began getting quite agitated whenever I would go into the cage, and refused to let me pick her up or pet her. Then about 5 days out, I noticed she was looking a bit chunky. This will vary in mama rabbits, sometimes they will look the exact same before pregnancy as during.

When I noticed that she was looking bigger, I separated her out from the others, which she was completely fine with. About 3 days later I checked the nesting box and there were 6 beautiful babies. Well, beautiful in a naked mole rat since.

Babies will be blind for about 11 days. Their fur will begin growing in about 3 days.

Mama will only feed their babies about once per day, usually at night. Be sure you are checking the baby bellies and making sure they are nice and plump, you may need to supplement them a little with formula.

The babies will need to stay with mama for about 6 weeks. Some people separate them as early as 4 weeks.
