The Key to Laying Eggs - LIGHT

The other day we were selling some chickens to a new backyard chicken enthusiast. She had several questions regarding chickens and what she needed to know. One question she had, was how many hours of daylight was needed to stimulate a hen to lay?

On average, a hen needs 14 hours of daylight to be stimulated to lay. There is some variation in that of course, especially for some of the old-hearty breeds who will continue to lay in the winter.

According to the University of Nebraska, you should start adding artificial light to your hens in October.

Make sure you get a timer for your light. This will make timing your light much easier.
