Turkey Egg Facts
Everyone likes to eat chicken eggs, well what about turkey eggs?
On the farm, we have gotten our first couple of turkeys, 2 males and 1 female. We got them with the intention of raising them for meat. So we started doing a little talking and doing a little digging.
How often do Turkeys lay?
Turkeys generally only lay about 2 eggs per week. About half that of chickens.
When do they start to lay?
On average, turkey hens need to be about 7 months of age to start laying eggs. That is a long turn around time to invest in laying birds. For poultry farmers, sometimes the risks from predators and disease can be too hard to get them all the way to laying age. Not to mention the feed costs!
How long do they incubate?
Turkey eggs take about 28 days to hatch at 100.5 degrees if using an artificial incubator. This is a week longer than chicken eggs, but the same as duck eggs.
We are still a few months off from laying eggs, which we are hoping to hatch out of our broody hens.
We will keep everyone informed of our progress!
