Frost Bite in Chickens
Since winter is coming on, there is a couple of things to keep in mind.
First, how do my chickens handle the cold? Chickens for the most part are actually very cold tolerant. However, as the temps start dropping you do need to be aware of frost concerns.
Chickens are susceptible to frost bite on their feet and their waddles and combs.
How can you prevent this?
Let's start with their feet.
There are several options. First, use roosts that are smaller in diameter. This will allow the chickens to curl their feet and tuck them underneath them, allowing the feathers to act as insulation. You can also purchase heated roosting bars. Be aware with the heated roosting bars of potential fire risks. Most of them are electric, with minimal risks, but you always want to be prepared.
What about their waddles and combs?
This is a little harder. Make sure you have proper insulation in the coop and that the overall temp in the coop does not drop too low. Mainly ensuring wind protection will help accomplish this. You can also place a heat lamp in the coop. We do this on our farm. I like to angle the lamp towards the roosts. In particular, the area I know my rooster likes to sleep. They generally will sleep in the same areas, so this is pretty easily done.
