Some days are rough...

It's been a sad 24 hours on the farm, some days are just like that. It finally got cold and my animals are having a hard time adjusting. Since we live in New Mexico, the days are typically sunny, making it warm. So when it is cloudy, it makes a HUGE difference.

Yesterday, we had our broody hen Oliver get off her eggs a little early. Typically, we lock them in the broody box until her eggs are done hatching. The mamas will cut their losses after their has been a few hour lapse in hatching. I let her out in the run yesterday morning a bit too early, and she left her nesting taking her chicks with her, except for the 2 that were mid-hatch. These 2 got too cold and didn't make it.

Yesterday, we also switched our 3, 3 month old ducks into the duck lot. They have been "hanging out" with the other ducks through the fence, so I decided to go ahead and move.

This morning I went out to feed, and my 3 ducks were stuck in the kiddie pool. It looks like they went in for a swim and couldn't figure out how to get out. Because it got so cold, 1 duck passed and now 2 are tucked in the coop with a heat lamp to prevent hypothermia. I am hoping with a little TLC that they will be fine.

I always hate it when we loose animals, but when you have about 85 like we do, you are bound to loose a few.
