Recycling in the Garden - Bottle Greenhouse
I saw a thing on pintrest and my immediate reaction was, 'no, that wont work'. Well, I was wrong.
Do you want to start some seeds a little early, or do you want to put some seedlings outside, but it still a few weeks before your last frost? Don't have a greenhouse? You can use plastic bottles!
Take a clear plastic bottle, such as coke and cut it just above the label.
When you place it over the plant, you will want to bury the lip about an inch to prevent it from flying off.
I tried it out on my strawberries and it worked well. I would not recommend it for growing plants over the winter, but for doing early starts, it was great!
For comparison, I put the bottles on some of the plants and not others. The one on the right used the bottle, the one on the left just had a straw covering. You can see how much bigger the one on the right is!
I did the same with this batch of bare roots and I can tell a huge difference on the starts with the bottle and without. I also tried using the top of the bottle with vent. The top portion didn't work quite as well as the bottom, but still noticeable difference.
