Weaning and Growouts
When the baby bunnies are about 8 weeks of age, they get transferred to the grow-out pen.
At 4 weeks, all the rabbits are weaned from their mamas, but at that age they are too early to separate. We try to wait until between 6-8 weeks, this cuts down dramatically the amount of weaning enteritis, a major killer of weaning kits.
When they are weaned, all the babes get put together in a "grow-out" pen. This can be any large hutch that will act as a holding cage until butcher. This lets them eat and eat to their hearts content until about 12-16 weeks.
On Saturday, we weaned our Thanksgiving litters, all 3 litters are in the grow-out pen and bouncing around! We have sold a few of the babies already, and the mamas are ready to be re-bred, just in time for spring.
